Costa Calida information...

Mazarron and Aguilas Puerto de Mazarron is a seaside resort town with excellent hotel facilities and a lively nightlife. You must visit the fishing port and the fish auction. The local coastline offers splendid beaches and unspoilt coasts. About 3km from the coast is the town of Mazarron with some excellent buildings including the Town Hall and several churches. Here too you will find the ruins of Velez Castle.

The coastal road takes you southwest to Aguilas, an old Roman fishing port. Hornillo Wharf, where iron was loaded for shipping still stands, a reminder that this was once a 19th century mining town. In the centre of Aguilas you must visit the lovely gardens in the Plaza Espaiia, the 19th century Town Hall and the impressive church of San Jose. In the high part of the old quarter stands the castle of San Juan de Aguilas, built in 1579. At the foot of the castle is the harbour and a typical lighthouse. The coastline here offers excellent diving.

Campoverde to Playa Honda Campoverde is surrounded by protected woodland and is in close proximity to beaches, the Natural Park, the Salt Lakes and the typically Spanish towns of San Pedro and El Pilar. Close by are the beautiful small marinas at Lo Pagan and San Pedro and Campoverde itself is a small village comprising of the usual facilities of, bars, restaurants and small shops etc. The coastline of Pilar de la Horadada is more than 4km long with very differing scenery. There are wide safe beaches of fine white sand in sharp contrast to the blue of the sea and tiny rocky shelves which jut out into the sea. All the beaches in this area have earned the Blue Flag award and provide excellent facilities during the summer months. The sailing club offers many services for the boating enthusiast and the facilities are excellent for water ski-ing, paracraft, sailing and all sorts of sports fishing.

The transparent waters, abundance of marine life and good visibility make this area perfect for sub-aqua divers. Summer courses for divers are held for people keen to learn or practice diving. The variety of fauna and "gardens" of Posidonia are there to explore as well as a sunken wreck - an old coal carrier which can be seen in the deep. On the extensive sand of Pilar de la Horadada live a huge diversity of invertebrate species from molluscs to flat fish like plaice. The prairies of Posidonia along the coast oxygenate the water and protect the sea floor and beaches from erosion, and within these can be seen seahorses, pipefish and other species.
